Lakeshore Museum Center

The Lakeshore Museum Center in downtown Muskegon is keeping pace by stepping up its cultural presence with more interactive opportunities. A new greeter awaits you at the museum’s main entrance: Moxie, a whimsical mastodon with blue tusks. A life-size mastodon is on display inside, and 20 more mini mastodons are on the loose, challenging scavenger hunters to discover them around Muskegon.

Focus On: Rockford Cheese Shop

As a wine and cheese lover living in Europe for two years, Heather Baehre grew to appreciate the fantastic variety of good artisan cheeses available there. When she returned to the US, she noticed a lack of those same quality cheeses in Rockford, where she lives. So, when she found herself facing a layoff after 16 years working in corporate America, Baehre decided it was the perfect time to make a 20-year dream come true.

The 6,000-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath Transitional home received far more than a facelift from builder Gary Byker and project designer Janel Joppie of Homes by Gary Byker in Grandville. Together, they managed the entire project, from architectural plans to move in, including ordering custom furniture and hanging artwork on the walls.

Standing on a one-acre lot, with ravines and forests in the back, the home’s style defies easy definition. “We were both drawn to multilevel Prairie-style houses,” she says. “And I love Mountain-Moderns like you see in Utah. They’re very clean, with a mix of warm woods and lots of black — kind of a rustic modern with a woodsy cabin feel.”
